India’s New AI Model, A Challenge to ChatGPT and DeepSeek: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Indian government takes a significant step in the AI space. India is working on developing its own generative AI model, which could challenge OpenAI’s ChatGPT and China’s DeepSeek.

CMS College (Technology). India is now going to step strongly in the race of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has announced that India will soon develop its indigenous generative AI model, which will compete with existing AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and China’s DeepSeek. The announcement was made during the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave, where he informed that the government is working on a plan to make the AI and semiconductor ecosystem world-class.

This AI initiative of the Government of India will be developed under the India AI Compute Facility. For this, an advanced infrastructure with a capacity of 18,000 GPUs has been created, so that large language models (LLMs) can be developed on a large scale in the country. The government is investing in this project to promote research and innovation, so that the country’s AI capability can be strengthened and dependence on foreign AI models can be reduced.

At least 6 startups and AI developers will start working on this project in the next 4 to 10 months for the development of AI models. This will not only boost India’s technology sector but will also increase the use of AI in various sectors of the country. The aim of the government is to make AI technology accessible and affordable, so that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups can also take advantage of it.

India’s entry in this global race of AI is very important. OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022, which gave rise to the AI revolution around the world. After this, China’s DeepSeek developed an advanced AI model at a low cost, which created a stir in the market. Now India is also going to join this competition and introduce its own AI model, which will be in line with the needs of the country and will come with the support of Indian languages.

This initiative of the government will not only give global recognition to the Indian technology sector, but it will also promote indigenous AI innovation. In the times to come, this AI model will make a big contribution to India’s digital development and will be an important step towards self-reliance in AI technology.
