The US Commission on International Religious Freedom on Tuesday commented on the situation of minorities in India. It said that minorities are being treated badly in India. The US Commission has recommended a ban against India’s spy agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). For this, it has based its baseless allegations of the involvement of the Indian agency in the alleged killing of Sikh separatists.
Will Trump impose a ban?
The report calls for action against India’s spy agency, with which Washington has tried to build close ties given its shared concerns with China. Analysts say Washington has long seen New Delhi as a counterweight to China’s growing influence in Asia and elsewhere. Reuters has said in its report that it is highly unlikely that the US government will impose sanctions against India’s spy agency RAW, as the panel’s recommendations are not binding.
India was accused during the Biden administration
During the Biden administration, there was discomfort in relations between New Delhi and Washington over allegations of allegedly targeting Sikh separatists in the US. Washington accused a former Indian intelligence officer Vikas Yadav of plotting a failed assassination of an American citizen Gurpatwant Singh Pannu. India denied involvement in this. However, the Indian government considers Pannu a Sikh terrorist and sees him as a security threat.

The US commission’s report released on Tuesday said that ‘the situation of religious freedom in India will worsen further in 2024, as attacks and discrimination against religious minorities will continue to increase.’ It said that ‘Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party’ ‘propagated hateful rhetoric and misinformation against Muslims and other religious minorities’ during last year’s election campaign.

The commission recommended the US government to declare India a country of special concern for violating religious freedom and impose targeted sanctions against Yadav and RAW. The report also recommended the inclusion of communist-ruled Vietnam among the countries of special concern.
