Washington. US President Donald Trump has again given a strong statement about birthright citizenship. He said that the provision of granting citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants in America cannot become a means of crowding. Trump’s stand is against the 150-year-old citizenship law, which was also banned by the court earlier. But Trump expressed confidence that he will win this case in the Supreme Court.
‘Birthright citizenship was for slaves’ – Trump
In a press conference held at the White House, Trump said that birthright citizenship was originally for the children of slaves. He said that illegal immigrants should not come to America just so that their children get citizenship. Trump reiterated that this law is not for those who settle illegally in America.
A big decision was taken as soon as he was sworn in
At the beginning of his tenure, Trump had ordered a ban on birthright citizenship, which was rejected by the federal court in Seattle. However, Trump reiterated his intention to take it to the Supreme Court and expressed confidence that the decision would come in his favor.
Republican senators introduced a new bill
Meanwhile, Republican senators Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz and Katie Britt have introduced a bill to tighten the citizenship law. The bill argues that birthright citizenship is being misused. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, 7 percent of the total children born in the US in 2023 got birthright citizenship, including children of illegal immigrants.
