Simona Halep said goodbye to tennis at the age of 33

Romanian tennis legend and two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep announced her retirement from tennis on Tuesday. She took this big decision while addressing the audience after losing 6-1, 6-1 against Lucia Bronzetti in the first round of the Transylvania Open.

Halep said, “I don’t know if I am making this announcement with sadness or happiness, but I have found peace with this decision.” She admitted that her body is no longer supporting her like before, but it was special for her to bid farewell by playing in her country.

Simona Halep Retirement: End of a great career

Halep, who became world number 1 for the first time in 2017, dominated women’s tennis by winning the French Open in 2018 and the Wimbledon title in 2019. Especially defeating Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final was one of the biggest achievements of her career.

However, in the last years of her career, her ranking kept falling due to injuries and doping controversy. Currently, she was ranked 870th and was playing in this tournament through a wild card.

Surgery and a journey full of ups and downs

Halep came into the limelight in 2018 when she underwent breast surgery to maintain long-term focus in tennis. However, after this her performance could not remain stable.
