Greece Earthquake: Schools Closed, Extra Flights Arranged as Tremors Persist in Santorini

Greece Earthquake: Ongoing seismic activity between Santorini and Amorgos has led to school closures and emergency measures as authorities monitor the situation.

Schools in Santorini remained closed on Monday, while additional flights were arranged to help residents and tourists leave the island amid continuous earthquake tremors, according to Reuters.

Since Friday, multiple tremors have been recorded between the volcanic islands of Santorini and Amorgos in the Aegean Sea, prompting officials to close schools in Santorini, Ios, Amorgos, and Anafi as a precaution.

On Monday, frequent quakes, some measuring above 4.0 magnitude, shook Santorini, causing authorities to advise residents and visitors to stay outdoors and away from small ports. Disaster response units have also been deployed to ensure public safety.

Speaking from Brussels, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged calm as the island continued to experience seismic tremors. He acknowledged that experts were closely monitoring the “intense” geological activity and assured the public that safety measures were in place.

Despite the ongoing tremors, no major damage has been reported, and the earthquakes have not exceeded a magnitude of 5.0. However, as a preventive measure, authorities have set up temporary shelters in case evacuations become necessary.

Greece is located in a seismically active region, with earthquakes being a common occurrence. In 2021, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Crete, causing significant disruptions.
