Kanpur: To address the growing needs of Kanpur and nearby districts, efforts have begun to establish a regional development authority. The Urban Development Department’s Special Secretary has directed the formation of a committee under the leadership of the Kanpur Divisional Commissioner to create the Kanpur Region Integrated Development Authority (KRIDA). The committee will include district magistrates from 10 districts, along with local representatives, to consolidate district maps and prepare a report.
Similar to Delhi-NCR, the proposed KRIDA will focus on developing health, industrial, and transportation infrastructure in Kanpur and surrounding districts.
Districts to Be Included
Approximately two years ago, a high-level regional development committee led by the divisional commissioner had proposed the creation of KRIDA. The proposal, modeled after NCR, identified Unnao, Rae Bareli, Fatehpur, Auraiya, Etawah, Hamirpur, Kalpi, Orai, Kannauj, and Farrukhabad as districts to be incorporated into the authority’s jurisdiction.

This proposal was reviewed by Urban Development Department’s Special Secretary Uday Bhanu Tripathi and Chief Town and Country Planner Anil Kumar Mishra. Following this, the Kanpur Divisional Commissioner was tasked with forming a committee to generate a detailed report. The committee will assess the geographical maps, population, economic activities, and available facilities in these districts to finalize the plan.
Development to Be Centered Around Ring Roads
The initial plan for KRIDA considered ring roads as the development basis. Hospitals, trauma centers, industrial areas, bus stops, and railway stations will be built around these ring roads. Additionally, plans to connect these areas with a metro network are also in place.
Statement from Divisional Commissioner K. Vijyendra Pandian
The Divisional Commissioner stated, “Industry is Kanpur’s historical identity, and we are taking all possible steps for the city’s development and future planning. The government has instructed the creation of KRIDA to meet the needs of the next 50 years, focusing on infrastructure, services, and employment. Work on this project is actively underway.”
