Delhi Unveils ₹1 Lakh Crore Historic Budget: Major Boost to Metro Expansion, 5,000 New EV Buses, and Cleaner Transport Future

Delhi Metro Expansion: Presenting the Delhi budget on Tuesday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta termed it a ‘historic budget’ which will lay the foundation of a ‘new’ Delhi with modern highways, a world-class metro network and one of the largest electric bus fleets in the world.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta presented the capital’s historic budget of Rs 1 lakh crore yesterday. This is 31.5 percent more than the previous budget. CM and Finance Minister Rekha Gupta made many big announcements in the Delhi budget. The needs of every person, from common to special, have been taken care of in the budget. Special announcements were made in the budget to further improve the connectivity of the metro city, which will make the journey of Delhiites more comfortable in the coming days. Two big announcements related to the Metro and Transport Department were made in the Delhi budget on Tuesday. Rs 12,952 crore has been allocated for transport, roads and metro expansion. This amount allocated in the budget will be used for better roads, public transport and connectivity.

Delhi Metro budget increased by 6 times


The Delhi government has increased the transport budget by 6 times compared to last year, which has now reached Rs 2,929.66 crore. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) added four more stations to its network on Tuesday, after which the total metro network has reached 394.24 km, which includes 289 stations. The Delhi government has made a provision of Rs 2,929.66 crore for the metro this year, which is about 6 times more than last year’s budget of Rs 500 crore.

The Delhi Metro has got a boost due to Rs 2,929.66 crore dedicated for the expansion of Phase-4. The expansion of Delhi Metro’s Phase-4 includes major corridors like Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block, Indralok-Indraprastha and Rithala-Bawana-Narela-Nathupur (Kundli).

The construction work of 3 major metro corridors in Phase 4 is 60 percent complete. It includes Janakpuri West – RK Ashram, Majlis Park – Maujpur and Tughlakabad- Aerocity corridor. Its total length will be 65.202 km and there will be 45 metro stations. Apart from this, approval has been received for the construction of three other corridors in March this year. Which includes Rithala- Nathupur (Kundli), Saket G Block- Lajpat Nagar and Indralok- Indraprastha corridor. The total length of these three corridors will be 47.225 km and there will be 39 stations. In this way, a total of 112.427 km of corridor is to be constructed in Phase Four.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is moving ahead with the expansion of its Phase 4 corridor. By the end of 2026-2027, the corporation plans to build at least 44 new metro stations in NCR. The DMRC, the longest metro network in India, currently has 289 stations spread across 12 corridors. The new stations will be part of the Delhi Metro Phase-4 corridor, which will span over 395 km, including the Noida Metro Aqua Line and Rapid Metro Gurgaon. Currently, the DMRC only runs metro trains on the Phase 4 route between Janakpuri West and Krishna Park Extension.

        Green Delhi will be made with 5,000 new EV buses

The government has planned to put more than 5,000 new electric buses on the roads of Delhi by 2025-26. Currently, 12,952 buses are running in Delhi, out of which 2,152 are electric buses. According to the Delhi Transport Ministry, after adding these new buses, the total number of buses in Delhi will be 17,952, out of which 7,152 will be electric buses. Delhi Transport Minister said, “Our goal is to make Delhi pollution free. Through electric buses, we will not only reduce pollution, but will also give passengers a cheap and comfortable travel experience.” These new buses will have modern facilities like GPS, CCTV, and comfortable seats, which will give passengers a better experience.

The government has allocated Rs 1,000 crore for better connectivity between Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) through Central Road Fund (CRF) and Urban Development Fund (UDF).
